The judging panel has chosen The Edge of Sentience: Risk and Precaution in Humans, Other Animals, and AI (Oxford University Press) by Jonathan Birch as this year’s Book Prize winner, and it has been awarded the £20,000 annual prize.
Chair of the judging panel Professor Constantine Sandis, Director of Lex Academic and Visiting Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire, said: “Transcending the borders of philosophy, biology, neuroscience, psychology, and even arenas that are disciplinarily further afield, Jonathan Birch’s The Edge of Sentience: Risk and Precaution in Humans, Other Animals, and AI is consummately insightful. Birch probes – with entirely new tools and peerless rigour – issues including risk, precaution, AI, consciousness, agency, ethics, and the very nature of human beings and other animals. This meticulously researched book raises the ceiling on how all investigations into sentience ought to be conducted henceforth.”
The winning title was picked from a shortlist of first-class transdisciplinary philosophical research. The other shortlisted titles were:
- Manuel Almagro (2025), The Rise of Polarization: Affects, Politics, and Philosophy (Routledge)
- Peter Godfrey-Smith (2024), Living on Earth: Life, Consciousness and the Making of the Natural World (William Collins)
- Jules Holroyd (2025), Oppressive Praise (Oxford University Press)
- Adam Lovett (2024), Democratic Failures and the Ethics of Democracy (University of Pennsylvania Press)
Now in its third year, this £20,000 annual award celebrating exceptional discipline-transcending works has seen an impressive increase in high-quality submissions from around the world, covering a wide range of topics and pressing issues.
