Introducing our first Centenary Distinguished Member

We are pleased to introduce our first Centenary Distinguished Member, Dr William Godwin KC.

This new role for the Royal Institute of Philosophy gives individuals the opportunity to work with us to expand our audiences; bringing new opportunities for learning to those both academically involved with philosophy and those who are new to the subject.

As society evolves, the public need for philosophy has stayed constant. Among today’s questions of urgent public concern, it’s hard to think of one that doesn’t have a philosophical dimension:

  • Can there be such a thing as ethical AI?
  • How do we share the burdens of addressing the climate crisis equitably between present and future generations?
  • In an era of dramatic upheavals in the world’s population, are national borders defensible?

Our Centenary Distinguished Member takes the role of advising the Royal Institute on audience profiles who may be interested by content or events not currently delivered, and working with the Board of the Royal Institute as a ‘special advisor’ in areas of professional or personal knowledge and expertise – among other tasks.

Dr William Godwin KC is a London-based King’s Counsel and visiting Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at King’s College London.
