Professor Ted Honderich, (1933-2024)

Professor Ted Honderich, (1933-2024), previous Chair of The Royal Institute of Philosophy, died on the 12th October 2024. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.

Professor Honderich served as Chair of The Royal Institute of Philosophy from 2006 – 2009, having served as Vice-Chair since 1995. Honderich launched the Institute’s Annual Lectures – bringing philosophers of international standing to London. He edited a collection of these lectures, as Philosophers of Our Times, in 2015. He established the Institute’s philosophical courses for students in schools, and the Jacobsen Studentships for postgraduate study. He was aided in this work by Ingrid Coggin Honderich, his wife. These programmes are still active and growing. As you know, the Institute relies on the hard work of its trustees, who receive no reward beyond being part of furthering our charitable ends; we are very grateful for all he did in building it up. Honderich published books on a wide range of topics – from terrorism to the nature of consciousness.
