“Does philosophy begin in wonder (as is often said), or does it begin in wondering? Philosophy often gets going when some familiar concept - as it might be ‘causation' or ‘time' or ‘obligation’ or ‘woman' - suddenly doesn’t seem to go the distance, perhaps because it sits astride some new social division, or thanks to new scientific discoveries. So instead of asking what causes what, or what we’re obliged to do, we start asking - that is, wondering - what causation is or what obligation is. Once we’re doing that, philosophy has taken flight. Please join us as a member of the Royal Institute of Philosophy for lectures, symposia and other flights of the philosophical imagination, and to connect with a community of like-minded individuals.”
Professor Edward Harcourt MBE, Academic Director, Royal Institute of Philosophy and Professor of Philosophy, University of Oxford
