‘Within the centenary selection of 100 papers a surprisingly high number are on topics related to the moral response to wrongdoing: punishment, mercy and forgiveness, including some of the most cited papers in the journal. These include the landmark papers by Joanna North ‘Wrongdoing and Forgiveness’ (1987) and Alwynne Smart ‘Mercy’ (1968) as well as several on punishment, including one of the earliest papers in the collection, W.D. Ross ’The Ethics of Punishment’ (1929). In this talk I will introduce and compare some of the main themes and arguments from these discussions.’ – Professor Jo Wolff
